Love Poems from Blurry Joy Love Poems

Hello, I'm Derek Day. Love poems make up my book, Blurry Joy: Poems of Love and Celebration. The book is now available for purchase. If you like the love poems you read on this site, or you know someone who would, please contact me for different ordering options.

Most of my best love poems are found on this very page. They all come from my book Blurry Joy: Poems of Love and Celebration. You may also click the 'My Poems' tab to the left to view different categories of love poems. There you will find Goodbye Poems as well as Sad Love Poems and Cute Love Poems. I won't make you wait though. I'll go ahead and give you a taste of Derek P. Day magic right now. Here is what I consider to be one of my very best love poems. If I had just one "signature" poem... If I had to choose one poem from all my poetry that exemplifies my views on love and poems, this would be the one. It's called Rainmaker:

Rainmaker
Rainmaker, water-maiden,
Give me first your mist,
Gentle drops to kiss my lips,
Your glistening dew,
A moist blanket,
To nurture this sleeping heart.
And then, pour your love on me in buckets.

For I am the dry man, the scarecrow.
Draped across my wooden frame,
I hang.
Lonely in the field, my only communion
Ravens, and snakes.

Washing over my neglected bones,
Your drops fall diagonally, torrentially
Onto my barren soil,
And I sprout.
Tiny shoots of grass grow in me thanks to your rain.
Hot, hard cracked earth is now lush,
Like my lover's garden.

My lips were cracked, like the ground,
Dry from the drought
And with dirt in my mouth,
I fell dizzy from the sun.

My precious waterfall, renew me with your flow,
And green, I will grow, I will grow.
Caught in your deluge, I will laugh,
Drenched, I will laugh,
Because in your loving rain I am full.
You have soaked my green meadow, filled my waterways.
My stream becomes a river in your flood.
Gullies and lakes and oceans lie within me,
And you have filled them all.
Pour your love upon me beautiful girl.

New Feature - Submit your own poems! They can be love poems or sad love poems, or they may have nothing to do with love. I just want to offer a place for people to publish their poems online. For now, here is another one of my favorite short love poems:

Sundown
I?m thinking of you sundown.
I'm watching your colors stretch
And fade across the sky.
I'm wondering how you got to be so bold,
In your departure from the day,
Always gracious as you summon the night.
Bright streaks and subtle eddies of color,
Riding currents of light.
That's you Sundown,
Always a lady, always a smile.
Never looking more beautiful,
As you leave my world,
And make your lonely way home.

In the above love poem I am, of course, making the comparison for the woman to the sundown. I like this metaphor. If you like poems with metaphors and similes, then you will love another one of my love poems. It's what I consider my best rhyming love poem and it is full of metaphors! For now though, here's a different twist. Imagine going to church with your loved one, but you can't concentrate on the sermon! I wrote this next love poem driving to the church and right through the message. I love this one. It's called Sunday Morn. Here goes:

Sunday Morn
The broad dark sky was tree-lined,
Such a vast expanse of gray.
Clouds they were, spilling rain,
On a Sunday morn, but there was no field of corn.
Only Black asphalt paved the way
To the steepled roof, where people knelt to pray
And sing as they did, with hands outstretched
Voices aloft,
Weeping.
And the man with gestures
Spoke and walked to and fro
Extrapolating certain meaning
From the small words in the big book.
Alters were built,
And should be built, he said,
As I held your hand.
Wells were dug and wells are good,
He said,
As I recalled the rain
Then drew an imaginary ring on your finger,
Smiling,
Hoping that it would not wash away in the rain.
This world is unkind,
Said the nice gesturing man,
And I think that he is right

The above love poem was a little different from the first two. In the first two you see where I draw parallels to nature. I often compare the woman in the love poems to something larger, to the seasons, to the elements, to life itself. This is only natural for me, and this next bit of poetry exemplifies this. This one is called All Of This Is You:

All of This is You
Deep in the forest, the beat of a drum
Or a heart
Arouses my sleep
High in the mountains
The sound of singing disturbs my lonely paradise
On a far away shore
Stillness, the gentle drone of an ocean
Seashell to my ear
To hear
The endless Swishhhh
And then there is laughter, always laughter in the morning
Disguising itself as the sound of birds
And the rosebud in it?s haughty red
Closes like a fist, like a tiny heart
And the gentle breeze teases my hair
All of this is you
And that familiar aroma
That carries me back to another time and place
To a different mystery
Back to when I was me
And De Ja vu
The haunting feeling
Of being birthed that instant
Into the past
All of this is you
The mud, caked and dark, smiles at me near the waters edge
And the ripples of the water calling, calling, calling
Always circling outwards
Delivering the message of you
And the howl in the night under 10,000 Angel eyes
Is my heart answering your call
And all of this is you

Soon I hope to host love poem blog, where you will be able to comment on my poems, the posted poems, or any poetry at all. As long as the blog topic is poetry related, then anything goes. Please stay tuned for the love poem blog. For now though, here is another of my favorites:

This Bed
This bed, an island, our playground.
Maybe a sandbox
And all the covers sand.

A TV, like a light house,
Shines across the blanket waves of this bed.

"Go ahead, tickle me, but I bite."

"Just don't leave a mark," I said.

This is my safe haven, my nest.
Your body stretches across the bed diagonally
And your foot searches,
Brushing against mine,
Then remains resting next to it in comfort.

Your legs hang over my body
Like a child hangs her legs over the end of a pier.
Your gentle rhythmic snoring
Embarrasses you, but excites me.
You are simply a human creature,
Imperfect but beautiful.
The scent of your womanhood is a repast for my nostrils,
And your soft skin a silken glove,
That my whole body wears.
Hug me, you said. And hold you I will,
Until the dawn
No longer offers the promise of the sun.

The above love poem was very light-hearted, funny, sweet, and still very compelling. I like to describe simple moments. Swimming Through Love
Cry with me
Rubbing your softness into my skin
Let us blend our tears together
Concocting wet sunshine
To flash across our years
Let your fingers trace
And let your lips erase all the pain
Swim with me
In wet desire
And may the juices flow
From one love to another love
So that we may drink and taste the wine of one another
And let us be drunk on love
Feasting on the meat
Of each others pure heart
And let us dance in the others dreams
While the bright moon of paradise
Shines on this night of our love
And may the sun rise
Upon our bodies entwined
Like rope, like bread, like a thread
Unbroken
By our long time...
Apart

That love poem, again, builds a tight connection to nature. Some of my poetry has been compared to Pablo Neruda for this reason. I am not trying to pat myself on the back (or maybe I am!) but I like the comparison, certainly. I also like blending nature and romantic themes. It's just the right combination for my particular brand of love poems. Please return often, and read the rest of my poetry. Soon I will be offer a free e-book version of the paperback Blurry Joy.

If you're in the mood for sad love poems then you'll appreciate these next couple of love poems:

Silence
In this silence I love you.
And with this silence I give to you.
In spite of this silence I cherish you.
But still the silence; I don't understand you.
Because of this silence I come to you;
Embraced in silence I hold you.
I've never known such silence, yet it speaks to me.
For with this silence I long to be.
Talk to me in silence.
Speak to me without words of understanding.
Let me not mistake this silence for neglect,
For your silence is love
In your own way,
And in your own
Guarded heart.

The Birth of Our Love
I smile at the birth of our love.
Because my lips remember innocence,
And how hope shined.
Poems, park benches, a picnic basket,
And an ocean view.
These were our deliberation.
And then the fleeting touch,
The hand,
And our first kiss.
That was when your lips met me,
And after,
Remembered me for a time.
But now they do not speak,
They do not speak, they do not speak
My name.
But I remember.
You wore suede boots.
There were clouds in the sky,
Sunshine in our bellies,
And boats with sails upon the water.
We blushed, we laughed,
We talked and dreamed,
Walking on that pier.
Come near, come near,
To me once again,
And let your lips remember.

Sad love poems are similar to most other love poems in that they celebrate your loved one, but these types of poems carry with them the end of a relationship. They are special. Sad love poems are a just another part of that magical thing called love. This bit of love poetry is also in the sad category in the book, Blurry Joy, Poems of Love and Celebration, by Derek Day (me of course!) This next poem is one of my favorites. It compares love to snow, falling from the sky. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy using strong metaphors and symbolism in my love poems, as well as references to nature.

You'll notice both in this poem:

The Killing Snow
The killing snow
Fell softly
Delicate through the sky
I laughed
Blinking my eyes
In the bright whiteness
This was love
I thought
Falling from heaven
And I devoured it with my senses
Sweet perfect snow
Lifting my heart upward
As it drifted to the ground
This love is not cumbersome
I thought
Slowly growing numb
Loves virgin birth on a winter?s night
Shivering, I thought
And I?m still smiling
Frozen dead
And covered white

In the above love poem, I liken the pain of love and loss to the snow, and to the main charecter's death. This is how we feel oftentimes towards the end of a relationship. Luckilly, we have love poem to console us and get us through!

Laughter
Long and lean is your laughter.
It stretches across my heart in pulses.
It is clean, like the wind.
I love your laughter.
It accompanies your smile everywhere you go.
This laugh of yours,
Embarrasses you with unexpected bursts of joy,
But to me it is bliss.
It is long and lean,
Clean, like the wind.
The sound is like a trumpet sometimes,
A flute at others.
Like Jazz
This laugh bellows forth,
Yet is freely feminine.
Your laughter also has shape, and color.
It creates a world of joy for my senses.
Inside that laughter there are sailboats,
Poems, freeways and sunshine.
Inside that laughter there is playfulness and mirth.
Your laughter is longer than your legs
And leaner than your arms, and both are a delight.
Your laughter is clean like the wind, loud like a symphony
And your eyes take a delightful shape when it erupts.
I can?t say which is more beautiful,
You, or your laughter.

that was a quick change of pace hu? this last love poem was a celebration of my loved one in a ver simple way. The way she laughed. That's all it takes to write a love poem. Just, recognize, appreciate, and put to words the things about someone that you love. These things are what bring us together as lovers or friends, simply appreciating their unique traits. This next love poem takes a similar direction for example:

Below the Ankle
Whether in sandals, suede boots, or heels,
I love them.
Bare, on the sand,
Or snuggling in bed,
I love them.
In tennis shoes while jogging,
I love them.
Each day you walk to and fro,
A woman, a mother, a citizen.
Yet secret beauty lies below.
Those dainty, precious things;
Are they tired?
All your weight, though small, rests on them.
I will keep them safe.
You can keep your crown,
Your life, and your heart,
Just give me my favorite.
I love your feet.
